International Writing Residency in Barcelona – Vil·la Joana 2026

The international literary residency programme in Barcelona offers creative stays for writers and translators whose projects are connected to the city.

The Barcelona Institute of Culture, as part of the Barcelona UNESCO City of Literature programme, has opened the call for the 2026 international writing residencies at Vil·la Joana in Vallvidrera - a historic site of the Museu d’Història de Barcelona and the former residence of poet Jacint Verdaguer.

The residencies are open to writers and translators from outside Catalonia, regardless of nationality. The 2026 edition includes eight residency periods, with up to three residents per session. The programme offers accommodation, workspaces, and activities designed to connect participants with Barcelona’s literary scene.

Eligible applicants include authors working in fiction, poetry, playwriting, comics, literary journalism, and audiovisual scripts, as well as translators with at least one published or staged work. Projects must demonstrate a clear link to Barcelona.

Submissions must be made via the Barcelona City of Literature website by 16 January 2026. Selected residents are required to participate in the programme and submit a final report. Any resulting publication must acknowledge the residency.

All the details can be found on the Barcelona UNESCO City of Literature website.
