Tartu UNESCO City of Literature International Residency

The call for applications for the Tartu UNESCO City of Literature International Residency (Spring 2026) is now open.

Writers, poets, and translators of Estonian literature from around the world are welcomed to apply for this international residency in Tartu, Estonia. Applicants must not be current residents of Estonia.

Important informations:

- Residency period: April–May 2026 (2 months)

- Number of residents: 1

- Application deadline: February 23, 2026

- Results announced: early March 2026

What is offered:

- A 2-month stay at the Karl Ristikivi residency apartment

- A scholarship of 600 euros per month

- Travel cost compensation up to 350 euros

- Opportunities to engage with Tartu’s cultural scene and perform at literary events

- Support from a local contact person who helps arrange performances, meetings, tours, and connections within the local literary community

How to apply:

- Fill in the online application form (you can find it in link to the drive below)

- Upload a fragment (up to 5 pages) of a published text (in Estonian or English) or a published translation from Estonian into another language

Selection criteria

- Upper-intermediate spoken English

- At least one published book, screenplay, theatre script, or translation from Estonian

- Interest in Estonian culture and literature

- Readiness to take part in local literary life (events, meetings, interviews, festivals)

- Ongoing literary work during the residency
