Korean-English literary translation residency in Norwich – July 2024 | Call for applications

The National Centre for Writing is partnering with the Literature Translation Institute of Korea to offer a translation residency for one experienced literary translator working from Korean to English. The residency will be at Dragon Hall in Norwich from Monday 1 July to Saturday 27 July 2024.

 

The focus of the residency will be on time to translate write in the tranquil surroundings of Norwich. There is information on the NCW website about Norwich UNESCO City of Literature, including a section on planning your visit.

 

The translator in residence will be accommodated in the Dragon Hall cottage. The cottage is part of the Dragon Hall campus, home to the National Centre for Writing. Downstairs it has a sitting room, study, kitchen and bathroom. Upstairs there are two bedrooms. Outside the cottage there is a small terrace leading to the Dragon Hall garden.

 

The translator in residence will spend their time in Norwich working on the translation project outlined in their application. A UK-based mentor, possibly working in a different language combination will be arranged, who will also be an experienced literary translator, to give the translator in residence peer feedback and advice on their work and career.

 

The Korean translator in residence will be introduced  to local writers and literary translators at the Dragon Hall Social, a monthly networking event with the literary community in Norwich. The Korean translator in residence will also have the opportunity to attend plenary sessions at the BCLT summer school, which will take place online in 2024.

 

Organisers will invite the Korean translator in residence to write a piece for the Walking Norwich series as an opportunity to reflect on the residency.
