Polish Literary Translators Associaton

Warsaw

Established in 2010 in Warsaw, POLISH LITERARY TRANSLATORS ASSOCIATION (Polish: Stowarzyszenie Tłumaczy Literatury, German: Polnischer Verband der Literaturübersetzer) is a professional organization for translators of Polish and foreign literature. Founding members include translators from Swedish, Norwegian, English, French, German, Dutch, and Ukrainian.

STL brings together translators of fiction, non-fiction, and audiovisual works. It aims to integrate the community of literary translators in Poland, protect their interests and support their development. It also campaigns for the promotion of literature and reading in general, for high standards in the publishing culture, and for raising language awareness.

STL gathers knowledge about the situation of literary translators in Poland, strives to increase their visibility, recommends distinguished translators for various awards, provides patronage for numerous literary and translatological publications. We co-organize conferences, postgraduate studies, workshops, and trainings. Together with numerous cultural institutions, we host meetings and debates on the art of translation. We provide legal counsel and advise our members on their dealings with publishers. Most recently, we have been working on a model contract for translators and collaborating with the Citizen Forum for Contemporary Arts on the creation of a system of social insurance for the creative professions.
