Sophia Korn

LITERARY RESIDENCIES IN WARSAW FOR WRITERS, PLAYWRITERS AND TRANSLATORS FROM BELARUS AND UKRAINE

She is a translator, a Jewish studies scholar, and a paramedic of the Volunteer Medical Battalion “Hospitallers”.  

 

She studied philology and Jewish studies at the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” and Linguistics, Philology, and Phonetics at the University of Oxford. She is an alumna of the One-Year Programme of Paideia – the European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden. 

 

Sophia was an IWM (Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna) Paul Celan translation fellow. She regularly participates in programmes enhancing her Yiddish skills, the most recent of which is the Yiddish Pedagogy Fellowship of the Yiddish Book Center. She presents her research at academic conferences.  

 

Sophia teaches Yiddish at the Master Programme in Jewish studies at the NaUKMA and the Interdisciplinary Certificate Programme in Jewish Studies by A. Krymskyi Institute of Oriental Studies. She translates from Yiddish and Hebrew into Ukrainian at the Centre for the Studies of History and Culture of East European Jewry at the NaUKMA and Duh i Litera publishing house.  

 

She translated letters and a short story of Irme Druker, poetry by Arn Tseytlin, short stories by Yitskhok Paner and Shaye Shpigl, and a part of Hasidic by Yitskhok-Leybush Perets. She is currently working on Tales by Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav and a book of ten Yiddish women poets born in Ukraine.  

 

Her research interests are the Sefer ha-Cheshek, an 18th-century magical and medical manuscript, the history of Eastern Yiddish and Eastern Judeo-Slavic.  

 

She serves as a Hospitallers paramedic, providing prehospital care to Ukrainian casualties of the Russo-Ukrainian war.
