WRITING IN GDAŃSK – MARIA JANION RESIDENCY

Residency, being part of „Writing in Gdańsk” programme, is dedicated to authors interested in the life and work of prof. Maria Janion, researching it or referencing in their artistic practice, especially one related to literature. From 2026 the operator of the programme is Gdańsk House of Literature.

The aim of the residency is to encourage next generations of researchers and creatives to work on scientific, critical, and artistic texts and related forms inspired by the themes related to the legacy of prof. Maria Janion – in particular in connection to her influence on Gdańsk’s literary field. During the 3-week stay, as part of the programme of the GdańskHouse of Literature, the resident will also have a chance to partake in an author’s meeting or a panel discussion.

What is offered:

- a stipend of 1100 pln gross / each week of residency

- covering travel costs to and from Gdańsk

- free-of-charge accomodation in a studio at Świętojańska Street in Gdańsk

- organisational and promotional support

- participation in the cultural activities at the Gdańsk House of Literature

Criteria:

All aplications will be evaluated by a commission consisting of the staff members of the Gdańsk House of Literature and the City Culture Institute. The composition of the jury shall remain confidential until the results of the selection proceedings are announced.

By the time of sending the application, the applicant should have published a scientific monograph or at least two articles in scientific journals or reviewed conference proceedings, in which they refer to the life and work of prof. Maria Janion. Alternatively, they have presented an interdisciplinary project or published at least one literary work or two articles in literary journals of national or international scope, in which they refer to the themes developed in the texts of prof. Maria Janion.

A good command of either Polish or English is required.

How to apply:

The application should include:

- correctly filled-out form

- resume

- covering letter

- description of a project, which will be developed during the residency, along with a preliminary schedule

- fragment of a scientific or literary work or a presentation showcasing an interdisciplinary project.

17.08 – 20.09.2026

Announcement of the results:

until 27.09.2026

Residency period:

3 weeks, in the specific period agreed upon with the Organiser, between 19.10.2026 and 13.12.2026.
